CHAMBRE ART: Toba Khedoori
Toba Khedoori (1964, Sydney) is an Australian visual artist with Jewish-Iraqi parentage based in Los Angeles, USA.
She is known for her gigantic draft drawings that show familiar objects divorced from any background with a rethinking of the spatial dimension and the architectural space. Toba creates solitary spaces with windows, plants, branches and leaves, train compartments, doors and horizon lines always devoid of human presence.
The artist used the draft drawn as the main medium as a metaphor for something not complete, not finished, as mysterious as the subjects of her works.
Her works are like contrasting, but in an intriguing way. On one side we see the drawings, enigmatic and evocative, lacking in information and elements, and on the other side we see the oil paintings on easel excessively rich in almost detailed information a zoomed-in, detailed views of single subjects with a descriptive quality that feels overly measured and empirical.
Her work appear silent and monumental, fragile and mysterious, revealing something that cannot be captured and in this lies the power and the wonder of her work.
She exhibited at prominent institutions worldwide, including the St. Louis Art Museum, Missouri (2003); Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin (2002); Whitechapel Gallery, London (2001); Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Basel (2001); and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC (1997). Her first museum solo exhibition was organized in 1997 by The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and traveled to the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota.Â
The Artist's work is represented in major museum collections worldwide, including The Broad, Los Angeles; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.
